XCOM 2 is a turn-based tactics video game developed by Firaxis Games and published by 2K Games for Microsoft Windows, OS X, and Linux in February 2016, and for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in September 2016. The game is the sequel to 2012's reboot of the series, XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Taking place 20 years after the events of Enemy Unknown, it follows the continuity that XCOM, a military organization trying to fight off an alien invasion, has lost the war, and is now a resistance force against their occupation of Earth and their established totalitarian regime and military dictatorship. The expansion XCOM 2: War of the Chosen was released in 2017.

Gameplay

Turn-based combat

XCOM 2 casts the player as the commander of the eponymous military organization, now reduced to a resistance force opposing the ongoing alien occupation of the planet. Played from a top-down perspective, the game is a turn-based tactics title in which players issue commands to a squad of one and six human soldiers to eliminate all aliens in a map and dependent on missions, complete secondary objectives. Many of the missions are timed, requiring players to complete it within several turns. Maps are procedurally generated to create a wide variety of levels, in which every map features different terrain and buildings in each playthrough. The game offers four distinct difficulty settings: Rookie, Veteran, Commander and Legend. After players complete the campaign, they can start a new game with the "Ironman" mode enabled. In the mode, the player's save file will be overwritten whenever the player performs an action, meaning that it would be impossible for players to import an earlier save after making a wrong decision. Campaign, class and enemy types can be created by users and can be shared through Steam Workshop. The game also features a one-versus-one multiplayer mode in which players received a fixed number of points to build a squad composed of both Advent and XCOM forces, and attempted to eliminate the opponent's squad in the battlefield.

At the start of most missions, the player's squad will be concealed and will not be detected by any enemies. They can position their troops to plan their battle and ambush enemies. Fog of war hides the aliens and their actions from view until the player's soldiers are in range and have line of sight on them. Squad members can hide behind different environmental objects to avoid being shot. Enemies programmed by artificial intelligence will attempt to flank, and if a soldier is exposed, they will sustain heavy injuries from hostile attacks due to the lack of any defense. Each turn, players can attack their selected targets with firearms. The game will inform the players of the possibility of landing a successful shot and the amount of health the enemy will deplete. Alternatively, they can also reload, remained in overwatch to shoot any moving enemy who is in their line of sight, hunker down, and hack into enemies' mechanical weapons like turrets and temporarily shutdown or control them for themselves. Each squad member can only perform a limited number of actions before the enemy takes their turn, and players can choose to end their turn early.

The game features five different classes, with each having their own Soldier Ability. Ranger wields a melee weapon that slashes enemies, Grenadier is equipped with a grenade launcher and explosives that can destroy enemy cover, Specialist commands a drone that improves the team's defense and health, Sharpshooter serves as the team's sniper, and Psi Operative, unlocked later in the game, utilizes a variety of telepathic and psionic powers. Enemies from the franchise, including the Sectoids, returned, while Firaxis introduced newcomers including the Vipers, a snake-like enemy who can drag soldiers out of their cover. When a soldier was injured or about to bleed out, medkits can be used to stabilize their conditions. Soldiers in the squad can be permanently killed by enemies; however, their bodies can be carried back to extraction to keep their equipment should the player deem it necessary to abort the mission. Likewise, if a soldier is critically wounded and it is deemed necessary to abandon the mission, a soldier can carry the wounded soldier to extraction where they are revived upon leaving the map. If the soldiers survive and complete the mission, they gain experience and will be promoted, which unlocks new options in the skill trees and customization items.

Base management

Players take control of the Avenger, a derelict alien ship that is also the new mobile base for XCOM, commanding the engineering and research department of the base between missions. Players can assign the research department to perform autopsies on alien corpses and study the alien technology collected from alien corpses, which unlock new gadgets, weapons and technologies to assist players in battle. Engineering department can be constructed to craft new ammo types, armors, and weapons. There is also the Armory, which allowed players to recruit soldiers and customize their soldiers' personalities, names, costumes, genders, nationalities, and weapons. Wounded soldiers will slowly convalesce at the base as time progresses. As the player progresses, new facilities unlocked, which allows players to increase squad size and improves combat performance and craft experimental weapons. Players also need to build Resistance Comms to establish contacts with the resistance cells stationed in various regions of the world, allowing players to keep expanding to new territories and maintain their influence. Facilities need to be staffed with engineers to ensure that they are properly functioning. These facilities can be upgraded to enhance their functions.

At the bridge of the Avenger, players can access the Geoscape, players can advance time, move the Avenger to various locations, access scanning missions and combat missions, visit the Resistance HQ to purchase new engineers, weapons, and soldiers, trade with the black market, and discover supply caches and bonus equipment. The construction of facilities required supplies, which can be collected through the excavate the alien debris in the ship by the engineers. Intel is gathered through establishing contact with resistance cells, which can then be used in trade. Other resources, such as Elerium, are materials needed for crafting new gadgets. While the player is managing the mobile base, the aliens also started up a research initiative known as the Avatar Program. It gradually proceeds over time, and if completed is an automatic loss. This can be delayed by sabotaging alien research facilities and other semi-random events.
